The Zine Suitcase is headed to Market Day tomorrow. It will also be at next weeks Art Friends event. The price to take some is to make some. Everything in the suitcase is up for grabs. Many new gems were created during March’s Zine Zowee. There are also stickers and a few hand made sketchbooks to be had.

Evidence over the social media reveals many participants continuing to zine in their individual lives. Please enjoy some pleasing images from the newest crop of zines and links to the genius makers who made them:

Event recap from Rachel

February 5, 2013

At the recent Art Friends (After Dark) event, there was a zine making station. We brought a printer with a scanner, paper and drawing things so that instant zine making could happen. And it did happen. We also received pre-made zines plus comics, coloring books, a vintage puppy calendar and many more treasures to add to the suitcase. Here, see for yourself:

See something you like? The Zine Suitcase has a Make&Take policy. That means, if you leave a new thing, you can take an old thing. The suitcase debuted at Art Friends and there will be many times in the future for you access the suitcase. May I recommend this Sunday? Cat Rocketship, Jon Pearson and I are collaborating on an interactive gallery show in Grinnell called Portrait Studio. Every Sunday this month we will be in the gallery from 1-4 drawing portraits….or zines. You are invited to draw or be drawn. Here’s what you should know about attending Portrait Studio. The suitcase will be there.

The zine suitcase is a portable distribution center.

Announcement from Rachel

January 22, 2013

This week welcomes the first organized community event from Art Beacon in collaboration with the Des Moines Social Club and Mars Cafe. On Saturday, January 26th, bring your drawing supplies to Mars Cafe and engage in hours of drawing with fellow art loving, good-looking people. We’ve promised a ZINE PRODUCTION WORKSHOP. This means we will make zines! You can draw, scan and print a small run of something created on the spot. Learn to make a zine from a single piece of paper. Help fill up the new zine suitcase distribution center with a whole lot of independently printed matter. This collective effort is an experiment. Help decide the future and fate of the zine collective by participating. Currently, the suitcase holds three sizes of zines:

Zines will be distributed by trade or donation. Proceeds will fund future zine experiments and material costs. This is the event poster:

Any way, hope you can make it. See ya Saturday.

Talking with collaborators behind the Meth Project

The Meth Project, Des Moines Social Club

June 14 - 24, 2012

Chris Ford, Matthew McIver, Chris Peterson

Interview by Chad

June 18, 2012

I had the opportunity to interview 3 of the 4 writers of CoLab: The Meth Project currently performing through June 24th at the Des Moines Social Club. The following are selected quotes from these interviews:

Chad Michael Cox: How does this play fit into the DMSC mission to use the arts as a catalyst to create unprecedented community engagement?

Matthew McIver (writer and director):

·      CoLab was formed as a way to tell Iowa stories.

·      These plays are original pieces of theater.

·      Our first play told the story of Evelyn Davis who created Tiny Tots Daycare and touched so many parts of Des Moines.

·      We started thinking about what else impacts multiple areas of Iowa.

·      The Meth Project provides multiple perspectives…a 360 view of the subject

·      The play tells 3 different stories and asks the questions, “What is the context?” and “How do we view drugs as a society?”

·      I think people will emerge from this play thinking differently.

CMC: How did you get involved in this project?

Chris Peterson (writer and video):

·      I’ve done video production for DMSC in the past.

·      The video provides context for the stories in the play.

·      I was drawn to this project because a friend of mine was on Meth…she eventually got away from it.

·      I wrote the druggy scenes based on her experiences.

·      These stories are based on recent issues. They’re informative and real – factual tales with creative license.

CMC: Describe the collaboration process during this project:

Chris Ford (writer and music):

·      We didn’t really know what we were writing at first.

·      I got involved initially as a music director.

·      Wrote environmental music, conceptual in nature. This music is different from my typical style because it’s focused on thematic interpretations.

·      I’m really proud of the result!

MM: We wrote a ton of material that never made the stage.

MM: I think the end result of collaboration is more interesting. It’s also a way to share the work load and keep each other accountable. We all have full-time jobs, so it helps to work together.

CF: We were meeting weekly, but there was also a lot of downtime. We had to push the project back a few times.

CP: At one point I don’t think we did anything from September to February because of one thing or another.

CF: We initially wanted to produce a commercial.

CP: We didn’t restrict ourselves. We spent the first three months just spewing ideas. I wrote this whole scene based on a Marilyn Monroe character in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but we eventually threw it out…we discovered we had three story arcs.

MM: Three stories without any forced cross-over of stories. Everything comes together naturally.

CMC: What should people know about this play?

MM: It’s funny, sad, moving, dramatic…

CF: It’s important that people understand what kind of drug Meth is…the Meth issue is still a real issue in Iowa.

MM: It’s not about good guys vs. bad guys. Yes there’s consequences to the decisions each character makes, but we can connect with all of these characters.

CMC: (To Ford and Peterson) As first time playwrights would you do it again?

CP: Yes, I would do it again!

CF: Definitely!

PedalArt Poster Show 2012

PedalArt, Des Moines Social Club

May 4-5, 2012

Review by Jon

May 7, 2012

The PedalArt Poster Show took place over the weekend at the Des Moines Social Club. The ballroom at the Kirkwood was brimming with solid iterations of bike themed posters. People flocked to the show, many on bicycles to show their support for area artists and designers. On the whole the show seemed to be successful, with many strong original works and it is evident that the screen printing culture in Des Moines is advancing. Many of the prints were very well executed on a technical level. The show will be hung at Raygun in the east village from May 8th to May 19th so if you weren’t able to make it out, you still have a chance to view the work. More information, including a list of artists, and other bike related events in the month of May, can be found at bike month’s website. Happy cycling!

Bike racks outside the venue were impressively full.

This grouping comprised about a quarter of all the work on display. The work was clipped to cables running the length of the room on both sides. The way the work was hung allowed the crowd to peruse work from left to right, and to get up close and consider each piece.

I had a personal “beef” with the fact the food ran out so quickly. All that was left by the time I got there was bacon grease drizzled popcorn (no joke). Behind the empty food-tray eyesore, and a gaggle of people, is a wonderful grouping on the East wall.

Illustrator David Kallemyn knocked it out of the park again this year. His ability to render light effects and create an illusion of depth in only 5 colors printed is uncanny. This is my personal favorite from the night.

Kate Allen created a poster that had a consistent crowd of people around it. Her humorous take on childhood ambition was incredibly executed.
